Residents urged to be aware and take precautions to avoid auto thefts
(KENT COUNTY, Mich.) The combined auto theft team which includes the Grand Rapids Police Department, Kentwood Police Department, and Wyoming Police Department is encouraging people to be aware and take precautions to keep their vehicles safe.
Local law enforcement is investigating several auto thefts in Kent County that have taken place over the last several weeks.
The Combined Auto Theft Team says people with Kia and Hyundai models that have a standard key ignition should be especially aware.
After the vehicles are stolen, they are sometimes used in other serious crimes before the thieves abandon them.
The Combined Auto Theft Team is offering some tips for people to protect their vehicles.
Those include: parking in a garage if possible, parking in well lit areas near buildings or cameras, activating the alarm system on your vehicle, and using a locking mechanism on your vehicle such as a column collar, steering wheel locks, or brake locks.
Law enforcement says you should never try to interact with the thieves if you see them because they can be dangerous.
